How long does the process take?
Physician review of 30-day tourist applications typically takes 15 to 60 minutes after payment and referral. Approval, issuance and delivery may take longer. Annual resident licenses are processed in 7 to 28 days, depending on the Puerto Rico Department of Health. The application itself takes about 5 minutes.
What documents do I need?
A valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, or REAL ID), proof of Puerto Rico residence (for resident licenses only), and any medical records related to your qualifying condition. If you don't have records, our doctor can evaluate you during the review.
Is medical cannabis legal in Puerto Rico?
Yes. Medical cannabis is fully legal in Puerto Rico under Law 42-2017. The program has been operating since 2017 and is one of the most established in the United States.
What if I'm declined?
If the certifying physician determines you don't meet the qualifying criteria, you'll receive an explanation by email. You're welcome to consult with your own physician about next steps or reapply with additional documentation.
Am I eligible as a tourist?
If you're a US citizen visiting Puerto Rico and have a qualifying medical condition, you can apply for a 30-day tourist permit. The process is completely online. You don't need to be on the island to apply.
Is a temporary medical card the same as the tourist permit?
Yes, they are the same document. The 30-day permit for US-citizen visitors is often searched for as a temporary medical card or temporary medical marijuana card. Officially it is a temporary medical cannabis permit issued by the Puerto Rico Department of Health under Law 42-2017, and it is valid for 30 days from approval.
Is a medical marijuana card the same as a medical cannabis card?
Yes. Puerto Rico law and the Department of Health use the word cannabis, while medical marijuana card is the more common term on the US mainland. Both names refer to the same official card, and the application process is identical either way.
Can I use my card at any dispensary?
Yes. The official card issued by the Puerto Rico Department of Health is accepted at licensed cannabis dispensaries across Puerto Rico.
